Don’t Forget Your Omega Speedmaster When You Step On The Moon

posted by Omegaman on Jun 28

There are certain times in history that can have a defining moment for mankind and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon was one such occasion when human beings walked on the moon for the first time. So it will be no surprise that anybody associated with that moment could share in that history and in this article we will talk about how the Omega Speedmaster wristwatch which was not only able to share in this moment but as a result became the most popular wristwatch in the world.

When people talk about the Omega Speedmaster history, they talk about 1969, the only watch in the history of watches to be worn by an astronaut on the moon, fact is, the Speedmaster was first introduced in 1957, so how did Omega manage to get their watch on to a NASA moon mission.

I’d have to say at this point that Omega were extremely lucky because their watch just happened to be picked along with a number of other manufactures by NASA in about 1962 just for assessment purposes. After a number of years of gruelling tests in pressurised situations the Omega Speedmaster won. Now I’m sure it wasn’t as easy as that, but to have your watch tested and certified by NASA is not going to do your company any harm is it, but lets face it, the Speedmaster was picked because it was and still is a fantastic, well built and accurate timepiece and as an Omega owner myself I agree with NASA.

Now we all know that Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon with his Omega Speedmaster don’t we, WRONG, yes, he was the first to walk on the moon but he wasn’t wearing his Speedmaster, why, because the lunar module had a problem with its electronic timer and Armstrong decided his Speedmaster would be a reliable backup, so he left it in the module in case it was damaged during his moonwalk. WOW, can you imagine the pride of Omega, two astronauts wandering about on the moon and just in case the lunar modules timer couldn’t be fixed properly they had an Omega Speedmaster as backup in the module. You just can’t buy that kind of publicity.

So the first Omega Speedmaster to be worn on the moon was by Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon and so history was made for mankind and the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch as it is known today.

Omega didn’t stop there, their Speedmaster watches were used in the shuttle missions after even more tests and they were also adopted by the Russian Space Station MIR after even more tests, in fact the Omega Speedmaster is the most tested watch in history.
